What's inside

01

Why musicians keep working for free

The patterns, the psychology, and the practical fixes that break the cycle.

02

The money you're already owed

Royalties, sync fees, mechanical rights — money sitting uncollected because no one told you it existed.

03

What the industry actually needs

Not what the myth says. What labels, studios, and venues are actually paying people to do right now.

04

The skills that get you hired

Sound engineering, production, business fundamentals — and how long it actually takes to learn them.

05

Credentials that matter (and ones that don't)

Honest breakdown from the people who do the hiring in Boston's music scene.

06

How to price your work

The frameworks working engineers and producers use so they stop leaving money on the table.

"I was making beats for years but didn't know how to actually finish a track — or charge for it. TRC changed both of those things in 12 weeks."
— TRC Academy Graduate, 2024

Who wrote this

We're The Record Co. — the nonprofit organization that has been building Boston's independent music infrastructure since 2010. Professional recording studios at 960 Mass Ave. Creative workspace at 55 Morrissey Blvd in Dorchester. Thousands of sessions, hundreds of releases, one city's worth of working musicians passing through our doors.

TRC Academy is where we turned everything we've learned into structured education — Sound Engineering, Music Production, and Music Business programs taught by working professionals, not professors.

This guide is the conversation we have with every artist who walks in not knowing what they don't know yet. We wrote it down so you don't have to wait to walk in the door.
